(Willows) Construction of the world's first rice straw medium density fiber board plant now well under way just in Northern California. Coldwell Banker Commercial toured the sprawling 273 acre facility west of Willows in Glenn County. The $198 million dollar project will convert rice straw into high quality, eco friendly fiber board to be used in furniture, cabinets, flooring and other building materials and sold around the world. The new plant will provide 150 new jobs and is considered an economic game changer for the region. In addition, the process reduces air pollution from rie straw burning and saves water that would otherwise be used to flood rice fields from decomposition.
